So sorry and crazy box!

First, sorry for slacking. Like a beautiful flower in the bright sunshine, I find  I stand up pretty and tall. This is the problem with me and sunshine, I like to be in full sun as much as possible. It's been busy around here with the nice weather that FINALLY came in but rest assured, I have taken pictures to post of the adventures we have had.

So here is a jewelry box I made for a friend of mine. It was a cheap purchase and I knew I would have to work hard on it but couldn't sand it down enough to make a difference. The box was lacquered so the spray paint wouldn't adhere to the outside. Thus, the idea to wrap a wooden box with fabric.

For this project I used:
$9 jewelry box
old container of mod podge
a few brushes
my hands
amazing Barbie fabric
screw driver
spray paint

First, I unscrewed everything. There were some gold pieces used for hanging the necklaces from and some drawer pulls. I also remove magnets from the doors inside and out.

There was tacky fake glass, I removed them completely because they weren't necessary and had some hideous wood trim on it.

Next I spray painted what I could. Luckily I had a plan B because the original plan was a shabby chic box but the wood was cheap and I couldn't sand it down. You can see my first coat didn't do much. I had to completely remove the faux gold holders from the box and remove the horrible liner to get a clean coat. I ended up lining the box with a bright pink fabric in the end. The paint wound't adhere to the fake wood inside the box.

Next I began to wrap the mod podged fabric and remove air bubbles as I worked. It took a while to make sure everything was right but it was worth the amount of work. I added a second coat of mod podge after I placed the pieces of fabric on the box. I also made sure that when adding fabric, I didn't over lap. I cut corners off to keep them from being so heavy. I realized half way in that the drawers wouldn't close with the extra fabric in the way. It was an easy fix.

Here is a picture of the original box.

And here is the finished box after being put back together completely!

Here is the detail of the drawers.

Another close up of the drawers

A super close up of the drawers and you can see I left the original ring holder but the new liner is drying against the inside of the walls.

Finished most of the outside but needed the rest of the edges done on the inside of the doors.

Voila! Fin!

Completely finished.

Bit of an overhead view. Yes, that is paint on my wooden table. I'd like to mention, the pain on this table has been there for 2 years. Also, this table just moved to it's new home in my room. It was originally my kitchen table.

Fin.

This was a really nice project. I hope to do more like this if I come across amazing fabric and can make something even better than it originally was. The person I gifted this to was really appreciative of it. I'm a real sweetheart when it comes to gifts so it was a cool and very tacky surprise. I'd like to add, the last time I was at her house I was in her room and passed it up... it was full of jewelry. She has been using it :)

Until next time Batman...
